Replace at a Leisurely Pace

It’s fun to mix up your home decor, especially when it’s frosty outside. When the weather gets tough, the tough go junking! I love the thrill of the hunt and finding treasures in unexpected places. You may call it antiquing, or thrifting, but I call it junking, and it’s one of my favorite pastimes.

Lately, I’ve been on the prowl for World War II sweetheart pillows like the ones pictured here. They were souvenirs sent home by GI’s to their girlfriends and loved ones. The graphics, colors, and sentiments are fantastic, and as I look at them, I always wonder about the personal stories behind these gifts. In the home, they add a nice splash of color, and they are always a conversation piece. (They’re also a bargain, my favorite one was just $5!)

I’ve also been keeping an eye out for reverse painted glass. I’m fascinated by the patience and skill it takes to paint something on glass to be viewed from the other side. The art form has been around for over 200 years, but in the 19th century it became a popular form of folk art. My two favorite pieces right now are a pair of late Victorian lamps and an old Statue of Liberty souvenir like the one above.

What are your pursuits for the New Year? Whatever you choose, enjoy the journey.
