Letting the Spirits Move You

The Victorians had a romantically interesting view of cemeteries and designed them to be more park or museum than burial ground. The living would picnic and play on the grounds among the headstones, and the dead would communicate through symbols on the elaborately carved monuments. Fortunately, one of the best examples of a Victorian cemetery in the US, Hollywood Cemetery, is located here in Richmond. Located in Oregon Hill on 135 acres of rolling hills overlooking the James River, it’s a fascinating place to stroll on your own or with a Segway, walking, or trolley tour.
