I always love gift ideas this time of year, and based on feedback from previous December issues, you do too. If you are still shopping, here are some ideas for people on your nice list.
I’ve recommended these before, but a great gift and my favorite wine glass is still the Gabriel-Glas universal wine glass. Lightweight, beautiful and well engineered, they feel incredible in your hand and make any wine taste better. Available in their machine blown edition ($34), or their even lighter, hand blown Gold Edition ($99).
Geometry kitchen tea towels are my new kitchen obsession. Geometry’s designs are created by artists, the fabric is made from recycled materials, and the end result is a lightweight, surprisingly absorbent and versatile dish towel. With literally hundreds of designs to choose from, it makes finding the right style for that hard to please person a breeze ($18).
Knock their (old) socks off with a gift from Bombas or Darn Tough socks. Never underestimate the gifting value of a box of good socks. I’ve always loved Bombas socks, they are durable, fit well, and they’re cute. On top of that, for every item sold the company will donate the same item to charity. (A women’s ankle sock four pack is $49.40)
I’m planning on hiking the Scottish Highlands this spring, and a friend who is an avid hiker recommended merino wool Darn Tough socks. At around $24 a pair they aren’t giving them away, but they are guaranteed for life to be comfortable, durable, and well fitting. The perfect thing for the quality conscious outdoorsy person in your life. (They are also darn tough to find on sale, but as of this writing some styles are 25% off at REI.)
For a versatile selection of bags and pouches, check out the variety at Aloha Bags. Available in a crazy selection of styles and sizes, the bags are splash proof and designed with organization in mind. ($10-$75)
A cashmere travel wrap is one of those gifts you didn’t know you wanted, but can’t do without when you have one. Made by White + Warren, they are versatile, lightweight and breathable. It’s also that perfect size where it’s big enough to be a blanket, and small enough to work as a stylish wrap. There are thirty colors to pick from, but my favorite is soft white. ($289-$350).
I think the definition of a good gift is something someone would love to have, but would not buy it for themselves. Sometimes you have to splurge to show them that they are so worth it. A fine perfumed candle is a thoughtful gift for anyone, and my long standing favorite is from Essential Parfums of Paris, particularly their Bois Imperial 9.5 oz candle. Click on the link for the long list of scents they combine, but the end result smells like heaven.
Finally, for that person on the go, I really love my simplehuman 5 inch traveling makeup mirror. It’s rechargeable, offers 10x magnification, folds flat and it’s a distortion free reflective surface. Works as well at home as it does on the road.
