Snow Place Like Richmond

Snow Place Like Richmond

Winter in Richmond has officially dusted itself in twinkle lights, spiked its cocoa, and stepped into its holiday best. If you’re looking for places to warm your hands, your spirits, or your holiday mood, Richmond has delivered an entire sleighful of winter delights this year.

Bundle up, gather your merriest people, and take note. Here are some of the most charming, spirited, and downright jolly happenings around town this season.

Those craving big holiday energy and joyful chaos should start with Miracle on Cary at The Jasper. Running now through December 30, this fan-favorite pop-up turns a corner of Carytown into a winter wonderland complete with cocktails that taste like holiday nostalgia. Parking can get tight on Cary Street, so side streets are your friend. Go early if you want a seat, and if peppermint isn’t your thing, don’t worry, there are plenty of options that lean more classic than candy cane.

Down Broadstreet, The Evergreen at Birdie’s pop-up leans into holiday décor with gusto, cheerful, sparkling, and lively. It’s an easy pick for a date night or a spirited evening with friends, and their oysters are a particular highlight if you’re craving something fresh amid the tinsel. While they’re no longer offering online reservations, several tables and all bar seats are held for walk-ins every day, and Mondays are exclusively walk-in friendly. Arriving on the earlier side will give you the best shot at slipping right in.

Holiday outings with a crowd call for West Pole at Bar West. Open now, the space is generous enough for larger groups, office friends, or big-family meetups. It delivers a cozy “winter lodge” feeling without everyone sitting on top of each other, and it’s a solid choice if your plans involve more than just two or three people. Check out their website for festive events they're hosting throughout the month.

A whole lot of personality awaits at The Emerald Lounge, home to the Sippin’ Santa holiday pop-up through December 30. The room itself is intimate, but the atmosphere certainly isn’t. It's lively, colorful, and decidedly enthusiastic about the season. The line can get long on peak nights, so arriving early is your best bet for slipping in without a wait.

Those looking for a celebratory meal will find a fitting option at The Roosevelt’s New Year’s Eve dinner. Their New Year’s Eve evening (priced around $80 per person) is already drawing interest. Think upscale comfort food, warm ambience, and a celebratory feel that doesn’t require glittery hats or confetti cannons. If this is your choice for the big night, book sooner rather than later.

A short trip downtown leads you to Fall Line Kitchen & Bar, where seasonal fun comes in layers. From November 21 to January 4, their Fall Line Express pop-up bar offers festive drinks and a winter backdrop. Limited bar seating and select tables are available for walk-ins, with a maximum party size of four. Seating times run 1.5 hours for parties of one to three and two hours for parties of four, no large groups here. Arriving early is your best strategy. They’re also offering a New Year’s Eve dinner for anyone wanting the “dress up and toast” version of the holiday, and the combination of hotel parking and valet makes this one of the smoother seasonal stops.

Anyone craving holiday comfort food and family-friendly festivity should head to Tarrant’s Downtown for ’Tis the Season, their holiday menu and décor experience running now through December 31. It’s classic Richmond holiday ambience. Cheerful, glittering, and relaxed. Easy to bring kids, friends, parents, or visiting relatives, and they tend to be accommodating with dietary needs, which is always appreciated this time of year.

Nothing captures the magic of the season quite like the Dominion Energy GardenFest of Lights at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. With millions of lights, model trains, s’mores, hot chocolate, and fire pits, it’s ideal for families, couples, and anyone in the mood for a little wonder. Dress warmly, aim for a weeknight if you’d like smaller crowds, and follow the smell of cocoa. Advance tickets are required and only available online (tickets are limited and have an arrival time window). Fair warning, parking is limited!

Meanwhile, those who enjoy their festivities with marching bands and floats should mark their calendars for the Dominion Energy Christmas Parade, stepping off this Saturday, December 6th, at 10:15 AM along Broad Street. Expect bands, dancers, balloons, community groups, and plenty of excited kids. Arrive early to stake out a good spot, bring something warm to drink, and be prepared to wave at every passing character as if you personally know them.

Holiday memories get a classic twist at Richmond Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker at the Carpenter Theatre, with showings beginning this Saturday, December 6th, at 2:00 PM. Whimsical dancing, elaborate sets, and Tchaikovsky’s familiar score make it a tradition that works just as well for children experiencing it for the first time as it does for adults who grew up going every year. Tickets tend to go quickly, especially for weekend performances, so advance planning is your friend here too.

Richmond’s holiday season doesn’t mess around. It’s glowing, warm, and ready to charm every kind of crew. Whether you want cocktails with friends, twinkling lights with your family, a parade morning on Broad Street, or a cozy dinner close to home, there’s a spot (or three) waiting for you.

Sleigh the season, y’all.
