Staying Active Through the Holidays

“An optimist is a person who starts a new diet on Thanksgiving day,” according to Irv Kupcinet. Since I don’t share that particular brand of optimism, I’m relieved that there are so many fun opportunities to stay active in RVA this holiday season. It’s great to get moving in between decadent meals!

The Wegman’s Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning has been a Richmond tradition for 41 years. The race course showcases the University of Richmond’s scenic campus and the surrounding area. A free fun run for kids aged 2 to 10 years old makes for an extra fun and entertaining event for the whole family.

The Richmond Run-a-Latke 5k and 1-miler on December 9th begins and ends at the Weinstein JCC on Monument Ave. This family friendly race begins at 10 a.m. and rewards participants with Krispy Kreme doughnuts, hot chocolate, and delicious fresh latkes. All proceeds benefit the Rudlin Torah Academy. This light-hearted local race is well suited to participants of any fitness level.

The Carmax Tacky Light Run is a festive evening race that begins at 6 p.m. in the Midlothian Mines Park. The course takes runners through the Walton Park neighborhood to enjoy dozens of spectacular light displays. The race is notorious for over-the-top Christmas cheer and encourages runners to get decked out in their tackiest sweaters and holiday apparel. Runners, joggers, walkers and strollers are welcome. There’s a cookie stop along the course, endless selfie opportunities, and even a North Pole party at the finish line.
