One of my favorite places to grab homestyle Cuban food (the veggie paella is my usual) is Kuba Kuba, located in the heart of the Fan in RVA. I met Manny Mendez, the chef and owner, when I was 18 years old. I remember going over to his house after school and gleefully devouring a huge piece of his grandmother’s famous tres leches cake. It was absolutely to die for! She still makes them today and if you order a slice, you’ll see what I mean. If you are a regular at Kuba Kuba, you know Richmond’s food scene wouldn’t be complete without Manny. If you haven’t been yet, get there soon!
