Live Local with a Staycation

Sometimes I like getting away from it all, but it’s pretty amazing when I can get that feeling without really going very far. If you’re looking for an almost stay-cation, here are a couple of places I’ve tried in the last few years that make me feel like I’ve escaped, but are convenient for a day trip or single night away.

Upper Shirley Vineyards: Located in Charles City, a mere 30 minutes away, this James River paradise has lovely views, an award-winning restaurant on premises, and delicious wines. Perfect for a day trip with brunch and leisurely wine-tasting.

The Kilmarnock Inn: A cute little bed and breakfast just over an hour away that will make you feel like you’ve gone back in time. The inn features 16 one-of-a-kind rooms for relaxing and is walking distance to local shops and dining. The inn itself is a relaxing destination, with a gorgeous garden for reading and sipping coffee, and a restaurant serving up savory southern favorites. Luxurious tip: the garnish on the Bloody Mary resembles a salad on a stick!

Monticello: Cold weather always feels like a good time to soak up a little extra history. No matter how many times I go, I never get sick of the clever quirks and unique stories that surround Monticello’s history. Go for a morning tour, and pack a picnic for a local vineyard in the afternoon.
