A Slice of Heaven

While fall has a lot of hallmarks – colorful leaves, pumpkin patches, and sweater weather – nothing beats this season’s penchant for pies. As we gear up for Thanksgiving, one of my favorite desserts takes center stage. Richmond boasts and incredible roster of bakeries, some with pie as the primary focus. So where should you stock up on holiday treats? Here are my favorites:

The decadence of Proper Pie’s offerings can’t be overstated (just check out the masterpiece I’m holding in the photo!). This Church Hill gem is a veritable destination for indulgence.

Sugar and Salt is a tantalizing combination of culinary pedigree and down-home simplicity. The ‘all butter flaky crust’ is a perfect platform for seasonal favorites like pecan, peanut butter, and pumpkin. If you just can’t decide which one to take home, choose a few of the more than 15 pie varieties on Sugar and Salt’s ‘sweets menu.’

WPA, another of Richmond’s best bakeries offers both savory and sweet treats. From lemon chess to mixed berry, WPA’s menu showcases an assortment of delectable pies that you’ll want to add to your holiday table.

But if you’re a purist and want to master DIY baking, of course the secret is starting with a good crust. Click here for the best recipe, no matter how experienced you are in the kitchen!
