Holiday Happenings 2019

Richmond’s holiday scene is an abundance of cheerful spectacles and events. From tacky lights around the region to the elegant illumination at Lewis Ginter’s GardenFest, there are outdoor sights worth bundling up for. Likewise, there are plenty of indoor delights that will entice you to stay put for hours on end, like the enchanting life-sized gingerbread house in The Jefferson and the Symphony’s annual ‘Let It Snow’ concert – both perfect to enjoy at any age.

With only a few short weeks until Christmas Day and the New Year, my calendar is brimming with Yuletide reminders. Here are a few of my can’t-miss regional to-dos:

December 6

Richmond Symphony – Handel’s Messiah

A hallmark of the holiday season, Handel’s Messiah is masterfully performed by the Richmond Symphony and Richmond Symphony Chorus with special guest soloists. Tickets are $20 to $60.

December 7

Dominion Energy Christmas Parade 

Departs from the Science Museum on Broad Street at 10:00 a.m., rain or shine! Holiday floats, marching bands, and enormous balloon characters entertain the 100,000 spectators along the route for this annual favorite.

December 8

Yuletides at Agecroft Hall

Experience the Christmas season at historic Agecroft Hall from three different eras: England in 1640, London in 1860, and Richmond in 1942. A unique celebration that’s fun for the whole family.

December 14

CarMax Tacky Light Run

A 6k course featuring dozens of homes bedazzled with the region’s tackiest light displays. You’ll love the festive route and the feeling of burning off a few holiday treats!

December 18

Vienna Boys Choir

Season after season, the angelic voices of the Vienna Boys Choir delight audiences worldwide. This special performance takes place at Richmond’s First Baptist Church; show begins at 7:30 p.m.

December 27

Holiday Cirque

Holiday Dreams presents a jaw-dropping, modern holiday show featuring cirque artists, comedy, daredevils and a modern soundtrack… truly spectacular!
