On The Oyster Trail

If you want the freshest oysters, go right to the source. My favorite Northern Neck supplier is Cowart Seafood Corporation in Lottsburg. They are a seafood wholesaler, but a local secret is that they will sell to the general public. Just drive in the plant, go to the office, and tell them what you’d like and they will have it packed in ice and ready to go in a few minutes. For even faster service, call ahead and they will have your order waiting for you.

If you want to have some fun along the way, here are a few suggestions:

Merroir restaurant, recently named in People Magazine’s “The Most Popular Restaurant in Every State,” is located in Topping just before you go over the bridge to White Stone. Great views, terrific food, and plenty of outside seating.

Good Luck Cellars in Kilmarnock has earned over 65 medals since 2011. They have a wide range of wines available made from their 12 grape varieties. Plenty of outside seating is available.

Adrift restaurant in Whitestone. Open for dinner, it’s a wonderful place for a meal. The dining room is currently operating at 25% capacity and take-out is available (it’s a popular local spot, so order ahead of time as menu items frequently sell out.)

Kilmarnock Antique Gallery at 144 School Street in Kilmarnock has 22,000 square feet of antiques and was voted the best antique mall in eastern Virginia. They say that eggs are cheaper in the country, so are the antiques.
