Bye Bye, Buy Buy

I wanted an expert’s opinion on what’s selling right now, so I contacted Harry Davis of Phoenix Estate Sales for his opinion. “Painting and prints are flying off the walls, literally,” explained Harry, “as people are spending a lot of time in the same location and focused on improving their surroundings.” He has also noticed an uptick in the sale of fine china, crystal, and silver after a few years of declining interest. When asked about the best bargains to pick up now, Harry offered that “old brown furniture is out of style, so it’s the perfect time to pick up very old, very beautiful pieces at bargain prices.”
In addition to art, other items that are reported as selling well right now include nicely made cutting or charcuterie boards in wood or stone, vintage barware, chinoiserie, and quality ironstone. Cookbooks are also increasing in popularity, and the 1st edition of Juia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking is now worth upwards of $5,000. As we all make the most out of the space we have, room dividers are also in vogue, especially curvy organic designs.
So, where can you find these wonderful pieces? If you’re in Richmond a great first stop is the West End Antique Mall at 2004 Staples Mill Drive. With 250 booths and 53,000 square feet of space, it’s a lovely place to get ideas and find that perfect piece. Another good start is Class and Trash in Scott’s Addition with their cool, funky, affordable, and ever-changing inventory. One of my favorites is Nest Antiques on 3404 Semmes Avenue, which features jewelry, antiques, gifts, and locally made art. The space is intimate, but don’t count on this being a quick stop. All the items are so well curated that you’ll want to take your time and enjoy the visit.
If you enjoy the thrill of the hunt, you can also see what you can find at the independently run thrift stores in town. If you are new to thrifting, start by thinking of a few things you could use, like an extra mixing bowl or some pot upgrades for your house plants. While you are there, see what else strikes your fancy. The trick is to try to ignore the clutter, think positively, and take chances.
What are the best trends? The ones you make yourself. Find what makes you happy, be bold, be sassy, and have some fun. Where to start? Give me a call sometime and let’s go junkin’.
