On the Hunt for RVA’s Best Eggs

Patio weather and the approach of Easter make this the perfect time to hunt for Richmond’s best eggs. I have a long-standing love affair with our town’s legendary brunch scene. From a fanciful spread at The Jefferson to worth-waiting-for huevos at Millie’s, there’s no shortage of tempting menus and festive backdrops to extend the weekend fun. While it’s impossible to rank Richmond’s finest egg entrées, it’s easy to list a few of the spots that you should hop into this spring.

  • Millie’s Diner is the quintessential River City brunch destination. Waiting for a table is inevitable, but your impatience will be appeased by the steady flow of mimosas and all the friends you’re sure to run into at this social hub. The vegetarian take on Millie’s classic Devil’s Mess is my go-to order, and you can count on this scramble of eggs, spices, and cheese to satisfy any appetite.

  • Perly’s fame is on the rise for all the right reasons. Recently named one of the nation’s top Jewish delis, this old-school eatery serves up huge portions in a lively atmosphere. Settle into a booth for a plate of potato latkes heaping with poached eggs and toppings of your choice.

  • It’s no surprise that Lulu’s has been named one of the top 100 brunch spots in the U.S. The menu is laced with extravagant omelets and upscale twists on classics like biscuits and gravy. If you’re in a particularly decadent mood, go for the lobster biscuit with scrambled eggs.

  • Dutch & Company is a departure from the brunch scene – they open only after 5:00 pm – but their “Perfect Egg” appetizer lands them on my essential eggs list. This exotic interpretation of the Scotch egg combines the earthy flavors of rye and cumin with tart-cured salmon and the creaminess of a perfectly poached egg. Make it your first stop on a tour through Dutch & Co.’s award-winning menu.
