Richmond has plenty of fun options if you want to celebrate the spooky this month, here are a few recommendations.
Historic St. John’s is having their Fancy Me Mad event, where you can stroll through the graveyard and meet fascinating spirits telling fascinating stories. It's a very entertaining evening, and an opportunity to learn about Richmonders buried at St. Johns and how they met their fate. When you are done communing with the spirits, join Edgar Alan Poe in the church for a reading. Saturday October 24th, located at 2401 East Broad Street from 6:30-9:00. Tickets are $17 for adults, children 6 and under are free.
Speaking of our cheery buddy Edgar, smack that silly grin off your face and have a miserable time from 6:00 to 9:00 at the Poe Museum’s Halloween Unhappy Hour on Thursday October 22nd. It's the most miserable evening of the year. Get your malaise on and have the worst time of your life listening to The Embalmers as you wander the Enchanted Gardens, refusing to participate in the costume contest, and sighing at the ridiculously futile nature of life.
The Virginia Museum of History and Culture’s exhibit Barbie: A Cultural Icon arrives October 17th, so of course there is a Think Pink costume party on the 30th. Tickets include an open bar and light bites, a DJ, costume contest, photo booth and after-hours access to the exhibit. 7:00-10:00. Hi Barbie!
The Wilton House Museum is having their Shadows of History, Secrets and Scandals of the Randolf Family event on October 10th at 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00. Murder, promises, scandals and secrets unfold around a candle lit tour of the 18th century house. Tours are 45 minutes and tickets are $15.
Riverfront Canal Cruises offers haunted canal boat tours from October 30th through November 1st. Drift through the most haunted spots in Richmond on this 20 minute tour featuring haunting tales of Richmond’s past. Boats depart from the canal’s Turning Basin at 139 Virginia Street between 5:00-9:00. Tickets are $6, kids under four are free.
